In recent years, Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT) have become increasingly popular in the automotive industry. They offer a smoother and more efficient driving experience compared to some traditional automatic transmissions.
But like all mechanical systems, they can develop faults over time. Here are three of the most common issues associated with modern CVT transmissions.
Oil Contamination
One of the most frequent problems seen with CVTs is oil contamination. Over time, small amounts of metal from internal components can break off and contaminate the transmission fluid. This will cause wear on the internal components and result in reduced performance and increased noise levels when driving.
You need to keep an eye out for early signs of contamination and address them as quickly as possible to avoid further damage. Take a closer look at the fluid filter, and if it looks clogged or discolored, you may need to change the transmission fluid.
In some cases, a transmission flush can help to reduce the effects of oil contamination. However, more extensive repairs may be needed if the fluid is heavily contaminated. You might need to replace the transmission fluid and filter or even internal components such as the torque converter.
Slipping Gears
Another common issue is slipping gears, which occurs when the transmission fails to engage properly when shifting between gears. CVT transmissions use an electronic system to control the gear ratios, and if there is a problem with this system, then it can result in slipping gears. This can be caused by various factors, such as failing sensors or even an issue with the control module.
Sensors help the ECU interpret information correctly, so if there is an issue with any of them, the transmission will struggle to engage properly. In this case, you may need to replace the faulty sensors. If the problem lies with the control module, then a full recalibration might be necessary.
Vibration When Accelerating
A third issue that can occur with CVTs is vibration while accelerating or decelerating. This is usually caused by a worn belt or pulley, but it could also be due to other mechanical issues, such as an incorrect gear ratio or misaligned components.
If you notice a vibration while driving, it's best to have a professional inspect your vehicle as soon as possible before any further damage is done. In some cases, the cause of the vibration can be identified and rectified fairly easily.
However, it may also require more extensive repairs if there is a problem with the internal components. If this is the case, you may need to replace the belt, pulley, or even the entire transmission.
